What Home Should Always Feel Like
At Green Village Children’s Home in Vihiga County, Kenya, nights used to mean more than fatigue.
The children slept on old bed frames with thin, torn mattresses that offered little comfort and even less protection. Some were crawling with insects. Others were so worn that they sagged in the middle, offering no real rest at all.
Last week, that changed — not just how they sleep, but how they live. Because rest is not a luxury. It’s essential — and for these children, it’s finally clean, safe, and healthy.
Together with Manna Ministries International, we went deep into those rooms — the ones that tell the truth about how children live when resources run dry. We carried out every old mattress and replaced them with solid bed frames, fresh mattresses, clean sheets, and mosquito nets. The air smelled of soap and new fabric. Some children couldn’t stop smiling; others pressed their faces into the new softness, testing what comfort felt like for the first time. Now, when they sleep, they do so safely — protected from the threat of malaria. They deserve nothing less.
But the work didn’t stop there. We stocked their kitchen with enough food to last several weeks — rice, beans, oil — the kind of basics no child should have to wait for. And thanks to our donors, we built modern washrooms and a new water tower, so clean water now flows — not just hope.
When everything was done, a special meal was prepared and shared with the children — music playing, hands serving, joy overflowing. In that moment, it felt like what home should always feel like: safe, cared for, and filled with love.
