The Gift of Sound

Meet Maria—a joyful and determined little girl in Honduras whose journey has been nothing short of a miracle. You’ll see her in pink in the photo, though we’ve changed her name to protect her privacy.

At just three years old, Maria had lost nearly all of her hearing. Thanks to the generosity of World Orphan Fund donors, she underwent a successful cochlear implant surgery that same year—giving her the gift of sound once again.

At first, every noise startled her—the scrape of a chair, the clap of a hand.

Then one day, she began to sing, and in that moment, we all heard the sound of possibility. Over the next three years, we visited whenever possible and kept track of her progress.

Then, this past April, her caregivers pulled us aside with concern. Maria was still struggling to build her vocabulary—about 70 words when most children her age know around 500. She is now six, and time is critical. If not addressed soon, the window for language development will begin to close.

We knew she needed something more—something that could unlock her ability to communicate fully. So we connected her with Happy Hands (Manos Felices) Christian School for Deaf Children, where Deaf children learn sign language. For many, signing actually strengthens their oral language and confidence to communicate.

Maria did very well in her evaluation—she picked up new signs, socialized with the other children, and connected with the teachers. To attend, she would need to catch up on math and learn more sign language. The school has offered to help her prepare enough to enter second grade later this year.

Maria’s journey is just beginning. She has the courage, curiosity, and joy to keep going—she simply needs the chance. We’ll be walking alongside her every step of the way.
